It's not a focus problem (and screen-recenter and mouse selection doesn't affect it). Playing around a little more, I find that the arrow keys are recognized and the insertion point changes accordingly, but the cursor does not move on screen. So, after pressing down-arrow several times, the cursor stays in the same place, but when I begin typing, the cursor jumps 3 lines
down and that's where the new characters are entered.

strange. was this happening in the older version of fullscreen?
shot in the darkness - can you try to repeat this behaviour when just resizing
the window?

I only get it in fullscreen mode -- not when resizing the window. I only noticed the problem today, but then I don't remember ever trying the arrow keys after fullscreen mode previously; so I don't know if it's a new problem or not.

but certainly can't confirm 2 chars/second here. also dont know how this
could
be joined with fullscreen patch. it doesnt touch painting code.

Note that the typing lag remains in fullscreen mode even when I have
limited the text width to 100 pixels. (I guess that means the whole screen is being repainted even though only a column in the middle has changed.)

thats possible. still the question remains whenexactly the slownes of normal window was introduced. i think horrible lag in maximized is just consequence of it.

That seems likely. Maximizing the window to take up the full screen (without going into fullscreen mode) gives a similar lag.
