Well, of course mutiple view (i.e. work area) of a same file is one advantage. Note that the two views right must not necessarily resides in two different windows, they could theoretically resides in the same window using two different workareas (accessible through the tab).

As for the advantage over two instances, perhaps you prefer to run two instances in order to have two windows... I don't. One instance means less memory, common cut&paste stack, cross-reference access, biblio access, etc. I cannot think of a single reason why two instances should be preferable. Except perhaps that on instance is immune from crash of the other instance. But we strive for stability right?
