Thanks for that. Your comment sent me off to check what version of pdflatex is provided by Fedora 7. I found that it's 3.141592-1.21a, which was released back in early 2005. There here been 14 new releases of pdflatex since then! I will put in a request that the Fedora people update that package. Cheers JP
