The way I expect (and mostly see) programs acting in the new file problem
is that when you create a new file it's a new, unnamed file, when you go
about quick-saving it [C-s], it pops up a "save-as" dialog asking for a
name, from there on it acts as usual.

The auto-save file can be a unique named file name that will be used for
this and erased once there is a named file or the user exists without
saving.

Just the way I'm used for programs to act.
