I was not aware that expandPath supports ~ notation. I think it should
not, actually... Making these variables relative to user_dir would be
more useful (so that it would work when user_dir is renamed).
That would be excellent, yes: We could store a relative path and
interpret it as relative to user_dir. But ending support for ~ would
break at least one user's preferences file. ;-)
