I'd propose to do as follows: if 'use amsmath' is - auto: require("amsmath") in validate, and use \text - on: use \text - off: use \mbox I do not know whether it is possible easily to query the amsmath setting when outputting text. It is important to allow for disabling its use (I think there are classes that are not comptible with it, but I might be wrong). JMarc
