sorry, there is no file format documentation as such. either you'll have to experiment with analyzing saved lyx files or read the sources. if you want to study only some 1.5 improvements it maybe helpful to look on development/FORMAT file and pinpoint the commits into the tree wrt features you want to improve. pavel
