Yes this is something uniq to Debian und derived distributions (Ubuntu etc.).
The 'problem' with xdg-open in this case is that it would simply choose the
preferred application to open the .lyx file which would of course be LyX.
But we want to have an editor instead so we've to call sensible-editor to
make a choice instead of xdg-open.
