Dear Developers -

my wife and I use identical versions of Lyx 1.5.2, on two MacBook Pro laptops running OSX10.4. Despite this, some files generated on my Lyx1.5.2 which has no problems on the original machine, will cause Lyx 1.5.2 to crash immediately on opening it on her machine. If exported and re-opened using Lyx 1.4.0, the problem seems to vanish.

Can you suggest what might cause this, and what diagnostics we could produce to help you solve the problem? There also appear to be font incompatibilities from an unknown cause, that generate messages suggesting that utf8 should be used. While not causing a crash, this will prevent any output from being generated when it is seen.

I suspect both these problems are somehow unicode related. It would be very helpful to have a way to choose standard Latex ASCII coding as an option, especially as unicode Latex appears incompatible with most journal websites that we send papers to. This causes many problems in reference lists that include non-English names, like German umlauts.

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed, as the new Lyx is otherwise excellent, and has many useful features included. I hope that these teething problems are just temporary!

Yours with best wishes -

Peter Drummond.
