Using the buffer language is definitely a step back, but thankfully it
only affects screen rendering. For information, this only matters in
french, where spacing is added automatically « inside quotes ». 

While the problem here is limited to people using french snippets in
texts that are mainly in a different language, I guess the problem is
raises is whether metrics and drawing do depend or not of the
language. 

What could be a solution is to add a new type of quotes (guillemets
with inner spacing) for french documents.
