Solution (in case you need help): go to the po directory, and do:
rm ca.*
svn up
Then try recompiling.

Thanks it worked ( as did reverting the patch -- I don't think I ever
understand the black wodoo by which those files get corrupted...)
Anyway the result is that I don't see any noticeable speed increase
when typing in insets. I get a small lag in graphic inset legends
that seems fairly uninfluenced (I have never experienced any dramatic
lags as some others have reported).
What has improved though is mouse-selection where it was before
sometime not possible (or at least very tricky) to select the last
characters.
I could not see any regressions in the very limited testing I did.
