How can I debug a "import failed" LaTeX document?

Now I cut/paste into my lyx document, export it as LaTeX, rename it into
something else and import it as LaTeX; all this just to find out whether the
"import failed" message appears again in the status bar.
This is very time/work consuming without much result so far.
I get four relyx files (.relyx1, .relyx2 etc), which *seem* to
be alright.

How can I more directly find out where reLyX is struggling when the
import fails?

Rob.
