Will write some documentation in the next days. Then I would like to commit quite soon. I used the 1.5 branch quite a lot for my thesis. So it is usable at least, but for sure with some rough edges, but better than the current macros anyway.

Yes, that's a good point. It's not so clear how to handle old documents. The behaviour there that macros are defined globally (even if the definition is at the document end) is different of course. But those old files will normally not compile correctly with latex anyway. Otherwise the format is the same as before, only that now optional arguments are allowed. I will write that also down in the documentation in detail.
