I recall some discussion of this (but did not follow it carefully). Personally, I like "optional argument", but I recognize that a sufficiently naive user might not connect that with a short title, for instance. That could be ameliorated to some degree in the documentation (section 6.3 of the User Guide already covers short titles, for instance).

Short of a context-sensitive menu entry that tells you what specific optional arguments are available for the current environment, I'm not sure there's a better way to guide that naive user.
