We are not talking about a fixed list of 'attributes'. We are talking
about general semantic markup. Browsing through a random CS textbook
suggests there are regularily several dozen things one might want to
mark.
I agree. I don't mean we should list all available styles. Only the
currently active ones, i.e., the styles that the next-typed character is
going to have. This allows you to (a) easily see what is currently
active; and (b) easily turn some off, if you don't want them. Adding a
new one? Well, you'll have to add it as styles are normally added, but
that's the same as it would be with insets. This "style-bar" could also
have a button/menu which would open up the dialog (or whatever) which
allows the application of additional styles.
