Well Word 2002 (XP) has a side panel in Format->Font
But I still think it might be good to have
both: a combo for quick access and a panel for more complex tasks. It could
be a dock widget where you could select between "paragraph styles" (what we
already have in the combo) and "character styles". The latter could have
the buttons "apply", "change to ...", "modify", and "create new". Those two
would open the character style dialog where you would define/modify char
styles.
