It was just segfaulting on startup.
I'm recompiling with debug code. This was supposed to be a clean 1.5.svn
copy for actual use, without all of that.

Yes. It was when I tried to:
./configure --enable-static --disable-shared --disable-debug
--disable-stdlib-debug --disable-pch
that I had the problem. Now I've gone back to my usual --enable-debug,
and it's ok. I'll try again with the other settings. It may have been
having too many versions of LyX lying around.
