At least you agree that 1. this is a problem, 2. you use bold a lot, and 3. the shortcut is not easily discovered for new users. This is not 'fix before 1.6'. 1.6 is expected to have \strong, and 1.5.x needs to have \textbf because of the lack of \strong. Bo
