FWIW, I agree that the toolbar design is awkward, and that a rewrite would be welcome. However, I would be surprised to see someone come up with a proper alternative to the general idea of polling getStatus (not one that fixes super easily 70% of the problem and then adds zillions of calls in the code to patch the remaining holes or that just gets rid of the features that do not fit the brand new framework).
