If latex is not installed, configure.py (with the patch I just sent)
will produce a default textclass.lst. Lyx will start, and can even
display a .lyx file. But lyx is obviously unusable. This is why I did
not like this approach.
It is nice to be able to have a working
LyX on a machine without also having to have latex.
Such a lyx is unuseable as a main lyx installation, but having
LyX on some portable thing (mediocre laptop or even a PDA)
is useful.  I can then write while on the bus/waiting for a plane
and transfer the lyx document to a proper workstation
when I get back to work.

Latex might be too much for small machine, or too much hassle
to install on short notice.  Or no need - I don't print on the bus. :-)
