Looking at this some more, I have been trying to find the code (for the
existing index inset) that does 1) the copying of the word the cursor is
in to inside the inset, and 2) the copying of the selection, if there is
any.

I don't see it. Am I dumb (no, don't answer that)

My guess is: look at InsetCommandMailer and ControlCommand...
