I think this depends a lot on the type of text being indexed.
Some will want to rewrite most entries, some will always
index exactly one word and so never rewrite.
Also, some languages have several forms of words but want
to index only the base form. (English example: Index the
word "car" in a sentence mentioning "cars". Norwegian has
much more of this issue.)
One should be careful with adding user preferences, but perhaps
this is a case where a preference setting is the right thing.
That way the writer can set up LyX to work they way he wants.
