How does the SGI-STL/STLport fare in relation with the standard?
It might be possible to use them, and compile externally the GTK--/Gnome--
with them and then compile LyX with them too, this should solve it,
although it will require quite a bit of work from anyone who wishes to use
the GTK version of LyX.

(I've tried to use the STLport but couldn't get LyX to find it, though I
must admit I tried for a very short time and settled for lyxstring).
