What about using the comment field of the zip file? It appears in the

manifest and start with an indication of the lyx format (and maybe
version).

I do not know the zip format well enough to do this. Our embedded
minzip might not support this either.

It does if we want to use it. Look for 'comment' in arguments of the
functions of zip.h and unzip.h. However, the simpler zipunzip file
does not use the comment argument.
I do not know about max bundle. In the lyx bundled file, relative path
is kept so embedded files in or under the document directory is saved
in their original relative directories.

A mac bundle is a directory which is seen by the finder as a single
file. For example, LyX on mac is a LyX.app/ directory which contains
all support files. Installing LyX is as simple as copying this bundle
somewhere. I have to say I like the idea a lot.

Me too, but in practice it's not that simple, especially when upgrading (with changed user directory locations). We should, in effect, make the LyX/Mac Installer program a part of the LyX.app bundle and ensure it will run at the appropriate times automatically. (I intend to raise that as a separate topic soon.)
