Sorry, i didn't mean that by 'preserving the identity'. I meant adding some
special 'begin' and 'end' tags to allow author to move the item across the
document. (Within such tags more info could be stored, e.g. the date a the
original author's name).  
That would be of help to authors when assembling lectures notes or homeworks
for students, making the drawing from their and their collegues' previous
work easier.

I have no idea of the difficulty of such changes. I have heard you
developers have made some progress in section folding, so i have thought
that technique could be exploited to preserve identity of 'inward' items.
