For the last time, here's what I think: A special inset allows exactly the same things that a char-level approach. An inset-level information gives the best way to control at inset-level.
By now, I have no time left for discussing again and again around the same issue. Make your patch, and we'll see what happens. I bet that "high-level" tools will be incomplete, or not provided at all.
