The loading of child documents happens automatically (my patch doesn't change this) when you do one of the following:
- latex export of the master document (and of course all latex based
  view/export)
- docbook export of the master document (and of course all latex based

- open the citation dialog from the master or one of the child docs.
- open the cross-reference dialog from the master or one of the child docs.

Thanks, nice summary. Pretty please tell me the above is documented in the code?

It is not. But it becomes somewhat obvious with my patch because I explicitly call loadChildDocument() prior to each of those actions.

Curious: How come it doesn't happen with other exports than LaTex based ones? (Are there only LaTeX an docbook based exports?)

There is also text but I think this one doesn't handle references and child document. I am not sure though.
