I just posted a further fixed/improved patch as attachment
to bug 3998:

Hopefully the last patch, with everything working as I was
imaging it should have (well, except macro expansion and
replace, and making the code more robust). The checkbox
regexp-mode has been removed in favour of an
auto-detection of the presence of regexp-mode insets
within the search text. For the non-regexp-expert, a few
commonly used regexps may be directly entered by selecting
them from a dropdown menu. The example file in
lib/doc/FindAdv.lyx (included in the patch) has been
completed as a quick tutorial to the functionality and
possible options (including regexps).
