I don't have this problem: I can produce any matrix size.

I have an Intel Mac OS X.4.10 with the following gcc:

i686-apple-darwin8-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5367)
Copyright (C) 2005 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

All that's the same for me.

(I'm currently compiling Enrico's patch....)

I have the problem with:

$ gcc -v

But I use cmake to build lyx. That might make a difference.
