The OptionalArgs line is in the 1.4 branch all right.

Currently I live with the incorrect output until the final output,
for which I export to latex and remove the lines manually.
I just put a note in the template (this is for an ifacmtg layout derived from
elsart, with the same author features).

BTW, the \thanksref command should be interfaced in the layout, but I don't
clearly see how to use it in the lyx template.
This reference mechanism is far too complicated IMHO and a footnote
would do it more thoroughly IMHO.

As far as elsart.cls is concerned, Elsevier in
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorsview.authors/elsart
refers to two different templates,
depending on the bibilographic style (one as harvard, in fact natbib as
harvard.sty is quite buggy I guess), and one "numerical", which is clearly
redundant as natbib allows numerical citations.
In addition there are classes for proceedings...

In the same line, the instruction files use a lot of verbatim stuff
which is pointless in LyX as the user sees an idea of the result, and running
lyx2lyx on these files generate a lot of errors anyway, they need to
be polished to get in lyx as examples (in the same way that was done for
the elsart template).
