I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be testing. With my Intel Mac and current svn (18963), I don't notice any speedups when typing in normal text or in footnotes or in LyX Notes (even with multiple notes nested inside each other).

That's normal, the development happened on my branch. If you do:

svn switch svn://svn.lyx.org/lyx/lyx-devel/branches/personal/younes/ mvc

or something like that, you should be able to compile it without having to retrieve the full branch. Or you could just replace the two attached files in your tree. Sorry I don't remember how to make a patch from my branch to trunk.

But then on Intel Macs there hasn't been a real speed problem in the last few months. Should I test something else? (I might be able to test a PPC Mac tonight.)

Typing as fast as you can in captions or in equations is the real test. I seem to remember that the foot note implements the wide() hack so this is not really a good test.

OK -- I did this. I still don't see any speedup with captions or equations, but then I didn't have a problem on my Intel Mac previously. Even watching the CPU usage of LyX as I drummed my fingers on the keyboard as fast as I could revealed no difference with your branch. (The real speed problems on Mac are for PPC Mac, and the slowness is there even for ordinary text.)
