Yes, I agree. But I don't see this changing soon, I think it must have
been like this for a long time. For now, just keep the RTL option off.
But this is one of the issues I hope to look into once 1.5 stabilizes...
When you switch keymaps, are you switching languages as well?
Rarely. I know I should, but mostly I just need to write Russian
documents, but with many (long) English paragraphs in them. Still, the
documents' language is Russian, I mean I need the babel package to
insert labels etc. in Russian ONLY. So I'm getting away with not
setting the language of the chars.

Like I said, no, but only because switching languages is quite
cumbersome in LyX, since it's not keyboard-driven. You have to take your
mouse, then do like 3-4 clicks to accomplish this, no? Or is there a
better way?
The correct way would definitely be to switch the language, not just the
keymap. Basically, you can just create a key binding to the "language
XXX" command, where XXX is your secondary language (i.e., *not* the LyX
default language, as set up in Tools-> Preferences...-> Language
Settings-> Language-> Default language). This command toggles back and
forth between the default language and the language you specify in the
command.
You're also going to want the keymap to switch at the same time. In
Hebrew and Arabic this happens automatically, but I think that's only
because they're RTL languages, so I don't think that will work for you.
If it doesn't, then I suggest adding the command "keymap-toggle" to the
same binding, so that the language switch and keymap switch happen
together. Let the list know if this works out.
BTW, I think that switching languages should also allow the
spell-checker to work correctly for both languages, which I bet it
doesn't the way you're currently working...
Basically, my idea is just to associate a keymap directly with a
language, so that switching to that language will automatically
switch the keymap. Would that work for you, or not?
I think associating keymaps with languages is a great idea, and it
makes a lot of sense to me. But why not the other way around, you
switch the keymap, and LyX changes the language, too?
I'll think about it, but I think that conceptually the keymap should
follow the language, not the other way around. The keymap is just a
means of getting the correct characters into the document, whereas the
language switch is the real goal.
Maybe the keymap format could be improved, so that the language to
switch to could be defined in the keymap file itself?
