I see, OK.

Select Greek menu, select a character, character entered, palette closes. But, problem character does not show as Greek (beta dispays as b, but pdflatex does produce beta.)
Select Greek menu, click on frame, palette close.
Select Greek menu, try to tear-off. I can't!!! Definitely worked last night! AH, just got it to work; I think I held the mouse button down for a longer time than usual with the pointer tip just on the dashed line or insignificantly above it.
Any how, its torn off now.
With mouse in upper bar palette can be moved freely around the screen.
With palette over document, click in document but not in a math box. Palette stays on top and is grey - good .
Click in a math box. Palette characters become black.
Sequentially select characters from Greek palette. Characters are displayed but in English, NOT Greek.
Click palette close button. Palette closes.

My previous messages to you were late at night otherwise I would probably have done this testing at the time. (In fact, the computer called me out of bed "Beeeeep" to address those messages! )

Now, off to the University to get it working on Linux.

I did have another thought after my last message to you.
That is, although I hadn't thought anything about it at the time, my initial inclination was to try and tear the palette off by clicking the mouse on the palette just BELOW the dashed line. This might be easier for users if it can be done and would also be a closer "tearing-off" metaphor. Just a thought.

This home machine of mine is an Intel Mac with OSX 10.4.
I'll l try the patch on my University Linux machine today and hopefully give your tear-off palettes a good work out.

could you confirm that the menu disappear after a click when they are attached, but that they stay on top when torn-off?

i agree, but we don't draw these ourselves so i am not sure we can control this...
