I don't think that "Adapt Output" is useless. You can create your
own config.<printer> in your $HOME/.texmf/dvips directory (or whatever
path HOMETEXMF points to) and then you will be using the right config
after specifying the printer in the File->Print dialog.

I agree that this is not for the casual user, though. However, I think
that we should not try to limit what LyX can do because Joe user
cannot think what "Adapt Output" is for. We risk to scare away power
users and I don't know whether exchanging quantity for quality is a
good thing or not (well, I think I know...).

What is missing, perhaps, is documentation about this kind of advanced
features.
