But then the line is a bit too long when I compare:

This and all other commands you sent lead to completely different characters 
here on my MiKTeX-system.

It seems so, but the updmap call doesn't work here:

C:>updmap --help
Usage: updmap [OPTION...]
  --output-directory=DIR     Set the output directory.
  --verbose                  Turn on verbose mode.
  --version                  Print version information and exit.
