I would assume that the first version of LyX that reads and writes LyXML (tm) will also need to read and write the old LyX format. Right? That fact has made me somewhat puzzled about the issue of merging branches. It seems to me that the current write() routines (in the insets, say) will need to be preserved as writeLyXFormat() routines, and there will need to be new writeLyXML() routines, as well. If so, there's no real conflict.
