(similar to the old math panel) or even a nifty toolbar dropdown widget?
This would be much nicer ui, and it wouldn't clutter the menu.
(and especially the linguists would love it, if it contained an IPA

I'd say yes, it would be better. Probably not before 1.5.0 though.
In 1.6, I would like to decorrelate the 'modern font' management and
mathed. Most (all?) the AMS symbols are covered by unicode. This means
that all symbols will then be available as simple text and not
necessarily within mathed.
Also, the kernel doesn't have to know how these symbols are displayed on
screen so I would also transfer the font/symbol correspondance to the
frontend.
