I guess you never tried instant preview... try to enable it in
Preference->Graphics.

OK, tried it, and it was a surprise, all formals become invisible.
Is my installation broken (cmake, in source)?
As you write that i remember: I had that often with a fresh installed lyx the first time i enabled
instant preview. After restarting lyx it never happens again.
