OK, after some discussion, Ulrich Günther came up with a reproducible
way to have incorrect highlighting. After some testing, I can provide
an even easier version:
Type: This is a test.
Go to the s of This. Type a blank.
Do Shift-Left to select backwards.
It seems (as usual) that the space removing feature plays tricks on
us.
This should be fixed before 1.1.5 presumably.

This is how it happens:
Follow these instructions:
Type: This is a test.
Go to the s of This. Type a blank. Insert a letter. Type another blank.
Now press ctrl-shift-left. Now you have double-highlighting.
