That's a bug. Perhaps it'll be removed from the menu before 1.5 is finished, or not. But I'd really encourage incorporation of such a management feature BEFORE 1.5 is considered finished. Yes, as a software edveloper myself, I realize it's a bit late in the 1.5svn process, but I'd still recommend it.

JMarc, is this what your patch (isRequired/isNeeded) is about? It not, I agree it would be better to disable the menu item if the package in question is missing.

There are several classes in the preferences, and I'm sure several 'features' no one will be able to use unless these third- party files are added. A lot of users that would otherwise use LyX won't; they'll give it a try, see something they want to use (the DocBook classes for example), try them, and get an error. They go back to what ever application they have been using.

I am afraid we cannot do much here... Under Windows, Miktex will automatically download needed package. Maybe there is an option to do the same under Mac?

Not that I know of. There is an application, TCOBrowser, that allows you to browse through a list of packages (and descriptions and documentation), and download them automatically. Sometimes installation can be a matter of double-clicking the result, but not always.
