Yes, as a software edveloper myself, I realize it's a bit late in
the 1.5svn process, but I'd still recommend it.
JMarc, is this what your patch (isRequired/isNeeded) is about? It
not, I agree it would be better to disable the menu item if the
package in question is missing.
There are several classes in the preferences, and I'm sure
several 'features' no one will be able to use unless these third-
party files are added. A lot of users that would otherwise use
LyX won't; they'll give it a try, see something they want to use
(the DocBook classes for example), try them, and get an error.
They go back to what ever application they have been using.
I am afraid we cannot do much here... Under Windows, Miktex will
automatically download needed package. Maybe there is an option to
do the same under Mac?
Not that I know of. There is an application, TCOBrowser, that allows
you to browse through a list of packages (and descriptions and
documentation), and download them automatically. Sometimes
installation can be a matter of double-clicking the result, but not
always.
