JMarc and Martin were both correct.
Attached is a new broadway.cls and broadway.layout bzip'd
In the process of switching most of the environments to commands, I also
got rid of a lot unneeded white space. Martin's \filbreak trick seems to
solve the problem of broken speaker lines nicely.

Sasa, could you try these out?

I make similar changes to hollywood now.
