Personally I like the inset approach. We just need some more cleanup and
design. I am confident that the benefit will show up in the future so I
am not in favour of reverting it.
Having said that, the labels could of course also be set a bit less hackish:
The inset could return a proper prefix. But this is entails more changes up
to the insetbase level.
Which would be a good solution.
