Contrast with what happens when you make a big stack of square roots (not n-root) or a stack of fractions. They always get enough room around themselves.

Insert a \root. The cursor is now in the blue box up and in front of the
root sign. Insert another \root there, and another ... till you have a
nice stack. Observe how mathed don't make enough room for this, so the
stack of roots break through whatever is above them. It will overlap the
lines above, for example.
