Well I have rather long captions here, over two or three lines so it would be useful to collape it to concentrate on the tables in the floats. But OK if I'm the only one finding this useful, I propose to leave it as it is.

Yes this probably the only real problem where collapsable captions would help.
I really like that captions can now be used for Longtables, but a proper solution without hacks to the first table row is 1.6 stuff I think.

You mean having the whole first row as multicolumn?
This is isn't possible with LyX 1.4.x but I haven't tested this with the new LaTeX table formatting of LyX 1.5. I'll do this when I find a minute.
