I don't understand. How will you produce the following?:

\item visit the following webpage:\\
\url{lyx.org}
\item look there for downloading \LyX{}
\end{enumerate}

Increasing the depth doesn't help. I have this case very often, that I need a new line within a list.

Aren't you basically quoting the URL? So how about:

* <item>
(increase depth)
        <quote> URI
(increase depth)
<standard> continuation of text of item
* <item>

If you don't like quote for the URI, just use a standard paragraph there (possibly centered?). The result should appear as

* Visit the following web page:
        http:///
  continuation of text item
* Item 2
