They also work for the internal selection, but do not make much sense because you can't paste them somewhere else than the current cursor location as you found out.
After you finish your selection cleanup/fixes, I will try to implement 'persistent selection' (show me how, please :-). Then, suddenly all 'paste selection', 'paste selection as lines' and 'paste selection as paragraph' menu items make sense.
