This could be the reason for the problems on the Mac. On Windows
we also
get the event when calling close.
That does seem to be it: I don't have either problem (session not
saving
or quitting without asking to save an edited document) when I
click on
the "x" -- actually the red stop light in Mac.

And what's the other way of quiting lyx? The 'Exit' in the Menu?
LyX > Quit or <Cmd>-q.
