I think you have confused window manager and X server.
I don't want you to try another X server.
I want you to try a different window manager.
It seems you are trying with CDE as the window manager.
See if you can switch to a different one, such as KDE,
Gnome, TVM, FVWM, AfterStep, or Enlightment.
I know that early versions of the KDE window manager had trouble with
the first dialog in LyX.
