I can answer for myself, it may help you.
I know how to compile from CVS (and maybe SVN, with a little effort),
but was not interested to do it because I had the perception that a SVN
version would not be usable, which IMHO should not completly the case
for an alpha version, which is in fact the case. This version fixes the
most serious grip I had with Lyx : no UTF-8 support.
So, the alpha label convinced me to give a try.
