Duh, it was even easier than that. Setting section number depth to 0 in
the document layout did the trick.
I thought I had tried that ages ago and it did not work. The LaTeX Comp.
says to set it to -2 in the preamble to get rid of all numbers, but LyX
only decrements to -1, and it overrides the setting in the preamble. I
can live with that.
